Field Marshal Wilhelm von Leeb Knight's Cross Document

This is a very RARE signed Knight’s Cross Document in Folder (Ritterkreuz Urkunde Und Mappe) presented to Generaloberst Wilhelm Ritter v. Leeb by Adolf Hitler on the occasion of his receipt of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 24 June, 1940, for actions as Commander in Chief of Heeresgruppe C.  He was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall less than one month later on 19 July, 1940.

This document was actually executed on 23 June, 1940, the day before it was awarded, as seen in this close-up of the citation. This is an overall close-up of the entire citation portion.

Adolf Hitler hand-signed this document with a fairly dry quill pen.  There are some noticeable skips (not bubbles) in portions of the signature.  The crossovers are readily apparent and there is bleeding into the vellum as seen on this view of the back of the signature.

There is some slight warping to the hard wood boards of the folder and some minor wear to the leather and bumps at the corners from years of long storage.  The retaining loop on the inside has broken loose at the bottom where it joins the spine. This could be repaired to be virtually invisible. The maker's name FRIEDA THIERSCH is gold embossed on the lower back cover. Note the interior portions of the covers are faced in vellum, not silk. There is some slight transfer of the printing of the document to the back of the covering sheet portion of the citation from many years of being stored closed.

These are views of the front and inside with the document outside of the retainer (both shown below) and the rear of the folder.  The gold eagle on the front is shown in close-up here.

The folder measures 36mm by 45mm (14-1/4 by 17-3/4 inches), closed.  The document measures 43mm by 70mm (17 by 28 inches).

ORIGINAL Hitler Skull X-Ray Lot with Documents

This is a very RARE set of two (2) ORIGINAL 8 by 10-1/2 inch, four (4) ORIGINAL 3-1/4 by 4-3/4 inches and one (1) 3-1/4 inches set of unpublished x-rays of Adolf Hitler's skull.

The x-rays were taken at the direction of Hitler's personal physician, Dr. Theo Morrell, following the failed 20 July 1944 assassination plot and subsequent explosion.  Hitler was complaining of intense headaches and sinus problems as a result of the proximity of the blast. A number of the x-rays were given to the National Archives, and others were retained by other intelligence agencies with some few pieces that were not submitted.  There is a photograph of an archivist at the UK Public Record Office in London inspecting a similar x-ray discovered in the War Office in 1995 from an article in the Minneapolis Tribune on July 12, 1995,  shown in close-up here. There is also a Military Book Club flyer from July 1998, cover shown here, relevant content shown below, of similar x-rays for comparison purposes. Please note the x-ray is shown in reverse from the photograph. There are a number of published examples of Hitler skull x-rays from published sources extant on the internet for comparison purposes. Any search engine will provide a wealth of links to well-documented records.

Hitler's distinctive bridgework on his teeth is very apparent in several of the x-rays.  Most are taken from unusual angles, including an extreme close-up of the upper teeth.  The smaller x-rays are shown here and here.

All of the x-rays were taken on marked Kodak Safety Film.  The distinctive alignment notches are very evident on the larger x-rays.  The larger x-rays are in the original glassine envelopes.  There is no pronounced vinegar odor, the documents have been kept cool and in the dark for many years.

The document is protected in a 10 by 11-1/2 inch three ring binder.

This would be the centerpiece of any advanced 20 July 1944 assassination plot collection.

Letter of Condolence and Death of TIRPITZ Crewman Document

This is a very RARE signed document from the Chief of Staff of the German Admiral commanding the Baltic Sea Fleet expressing condolences to the family and extolling the heroism and character of WILHELM WALTER, a member of the crew of the pocket battleship TIRPITZ, sunk by RAF bombers on 12 November, 1944.  The loss of life aboard the TIRPITZ was horrendous, with about 1000 (of a total of 1700) crewmembers killed during the approximately 10 minutes it took the ship to sink.

The letter was sent from Kiel on 16 December, 1944. It was typed on Admiralty stationery of the Office of the Chief of Staff.  It is quill pen signed.  The content is outstanding.  The entire text is shown in close-up here.

There are two creases from folds when it was mailed (the letter folded in quarters).

The document is framed and matted and ready to display.  It measures 14 by 17-1/2 inches in the frame.  The letter proper measures approximately 8-1/4 by 11-3/4 inches.

This would be the centerpiece of any TIRPITZ collection.

Kaiser Friedrich Signed Pour Le Mérite with Crown Document

This is an incredibly RARE signed document from the reign of Kaiser Friedrich III, King of Prussia. He only held the throne for a total of 99 days in 1888, from when Wilhelm I died on March 9, 1888 until his own death on June 15, 1888. He was in very poor health, and did not sign many documents during his reign, most of the empire's business was conducted by Otto von Bismarck as Reich Chancellor.

However, one of the documents he did sign was to bestow the King's Order of the Pour Le Mérite with Crown to his diplomat, Jacob von Kaenfeild. This award was bestowed on 14 May, 1888 in Pottsdam.

The condition is very good to near excellent overall, with some creases from folding, and light to moderate foxing from age. The wax seal is intact and not broken.

The document is shown opened to the text. The entire document is 16-1/2 wide and 13-1/4 inches high. The portion with the printing measures 8-1/4 by 13-1/4 inches.

Dr. Mansfeld ORIGINAL Göring Appointment Document Lot

The original document (orders numbered V.P.5846) and cover letter -- complete with the original envelope -- relieving Dr. Werner Mansfeld as the State Minister of the Four Year Plan signed by Goring in Berlin. While not technically firing Dr. Mansfeld, it was established that Fritz Sauckel would be appointed as his superior, essentially taking over the tasks performed by Dr. Mansfeld during the previous year.

This lot includes the orders as cited below. A translation of the significant content of these orders is shown below:

On 21 March 1942, Hitler promulgated a decree appointing Sauckel Plenipotentiary General for Man Power. This decree provided in part:

"In order to secure the manpower requisite for the war industries as a whole, and particularly for armaments, it is necessary that the utilization of all available manpower, including that of workers recruited [erwerben] abroad and of prisoners of war should be subject to a uniform control, directed in a manner appropriate to the requirements of war industry, and further that all still incompletely utilized manpower in the Greater German Reich, including the Protectorate, and in he General Government and in the occupied territories should be mobilized.

"Reichsstatthalter and Gauleiter Fritz Sauckel will carry out this task within the framework of the Four-Year Plan, as plenipotentiary general, for the employment of manpower. In that capacity he will be directly responsible to the Commissioner for the Four-Year Plan."

This document is appended as an attachment to the orders shown (translated) below:

On 27 March 1942, Göring, as Plenipotentiary for the Four Year Plan, issued a decree in pursuance of the Fuehrer's decree of 21 March 1942. This decree provided:

"In pursuance of the Fuehrer's Decree of 21 March 1942 (RGBl I, 179), I decree as follows:

"1. My manpower sections (Geschaeftsgruppen Arbeitseinsatz) are hereby abolished (circular letter of 22 October 1936/ St M. Dev. 265). Their duties (recruitment and allocation of manpower, regulations for labor conditions (Arbeitsbedingungen) are taken over by the Plenipotentiary General for Arbeitseinsatz, who is directly under me.

"2. The Plenipotentiary General for Arbeitseinsatz will be responsible for regulating the conditions of labor (wage policy) employed in the Reich Territory, having regard to the requirements

"3. The Plenipotentiary General for Arbeitseinsatz is part of the Four-Year Plan. In cases where new legislation is required, or existing laws required to be modified, he will submit appropriate proposals to me.

"4. The Plenipotentiary General for Arbeitseinsatz will have at his disposal for the performance of his task the right delegated to me by the Fuehrer for issuing instructions to the higher Reich authorities, their branches and the Party offices, and their associated organisms and also the Reich Protector, the General Governor, the Commander-in-Chief, and heads of the civil administrations. In the case of ordinances and instructions of fundamental importance a report is to be submitted to me in advance."

The translation of the order documents in this lot and some critical analysis of this historic document is located about half way down the page here, at the Jewish Virtual Library website. They cite the source document as: Nizkor. Nazi Conspiracy & Aggression, Volume II, Chapter XVI, pp. 690-710.

This is a historic document, in that it directly established the linkage between Hermann Göring and Fritz Sauckel, and was one of the hinge pins of the Nuremburg prosecutions case against Göring.

This is the ORIGINAL signed document relieving Dr. Mansfeld as the leader of the Four-Year Plan. It was signed by Göring in green pencil on Reichsmarschall embossed official letter head. The text of the appointment echoes the intent of Hitler's decree and Göring's concurrence. The orders show just the first page (three paragraphs and distribution list). The remainder of the text is on the back of the first page. The attachment of the 21 March decree is a separate page, printed on one side only. The envelope has the order number, and the usual Reichsmarschall stamp, and free-franked stamp, and 28 March 1942 postmark.

Offered at $5,999.99

General von Rundstedt Appointment Document Lot

The original promotion document and cover letter appointing Lieutenant General Gerd von Rundstedt as General der Infanterie and commander of Gruppenkommando I at Berlin. The cover letter is signed by Paul von Hindenburg, President. The appointment letter is countersigned by Kurt von Schleicher, who would later become Chancellor of Germany. He was assassinated during the Night of the Long Knives by members of the SS at his Berlin flat on 30th June, 1934.

This is an extremely rare set of signatures on a document of significant historical interest.

Both documents are signed in heavy black quill pen by v. Hindenburg in his characteristic style. The v. Schleicher signature is in a finer black quill hand. Both documents have the heavy embossed Wiemar Republic seal embedded. Both documents are dated 1 October, 1932. Included is the Frieda Theirsch Morocco Red Leather presentation cassette named to Gerd von Rundstedt and shown at the thumbnail below.  Thumbnails are NOT to scale, the documents fit neatly in the cassette in the inside pocket.

The appointment measures 8-3/8 by 13 inches. The cover letter measures 8-1/8 by 11-5/8 inches. The cover letter has some fold lines (in quarters) and there is some slight edge and corner wear, and minor yellowing from age on both documents. The cassette measures 12 by 16 inches.  It is gold embossed inside and out and on the back with gold leaf.  The Frieda Theirsch binder's mark is on the inside cover.  There is some minor wear to the leather at the corners, apparent in the images provided.

Part of the appointment document is printed, with the details of the appointment handwritten in the appropriate places. The cover letter is typewritten on Reichspraesident letterhead from the Berlin chancellery.

Both documents and the leather cassette are being sold as a single lot.

Offered at $4,999.99.

Albert Speer Top Secret Military Report

An Original and Authentic World War II TOP SECRET Classified German Report To Hitler From Albert Speer With Speer Provenance

This document is an extremely rare GEHEIME REICHSACHE (the German equivalent of "Top Secret") wartime report made by Albert Speer for Adolf Hitler about Speer's inspection of the Western Front between 26 September 1944 and October 1, 1944. The report consists of a 16 page main report and two 3-page addenda.

The report addresses specific issues regarding the Panzer units in the West. Mentioned prominently are the Panther IV, the Tiger I and Tiger II heavy tanks. Also included are assessments of the US Sherman tank and British & US Airborne units in the area of Arnheim. Speer directly interviewed several Field Marshals and Division level general staff and mentions them by name, including Field Marshals Model, Brandenberger, & Keitel, Colonel General Jodl, Leader Rust and others.

Referenced throughout the document are the following units (among others)

This is a truly historical document, and is one of very few surviving classified documents written by Reichsminister Albert Speer of the German High Command for Hitler's eyes-only.

There are many pages to the report that boils down to the conclusion that with the invasion by the Allies, the Germans have lost a lot of weapons and material, the fighting strength of the Western divisions was minimal due to the losses, however, the loss of the weapons could be partially replaced.

The report has impeccable provenance in the form of a letter from Albert Speer on his personal stationery, and signed shortly before his death in 1981.

This document is typewritten on very flimsy onion-skin thin transmittal paper. The paper has some yellowing from age, and minor discoloration on the extreme edges. T he paper is still flexible and readable, if handled with extreme care. The paper is fragile, but intact. There are some routine wrinkles, a few minor stains, and period penciled notations (a section was indicated for deletion). There are some minor corner folds, and slight edge da mage, as can be seen in the images below. Small images of the entire document are shown to give you an idea of the content and condition.

This is a rare opportunity to own a document of serious historical significance, made in the aftermath of the Allied invasion at Normandy, and the beginning of the end of the war for Hitler. This report was used as a springboard for the German Offensive that culminated in the Battle of the Bulge 2 months later. This is a very lengthy and detailed report.

The document measures 9 by 12 inches. The Speer letter is 8-1/2 by 11-3/4 paper, folded horizontally.

This lot is priced at $2999.99 to include the complete report and Albert Speer provenance letter.

The first page and provenance letter are shown in large scale above. It and the other pages in the report are shown in smaller scale below.

Famous WWI German Raider S.M.S. MOEWE / S.S. OLDENBURG 1933 Plank Owner Lot

This is a set of related documents, signed on the occasion of the launch of the S.M.S. OLDENBURG.

The first document is a 5-7/8 by 4-1/8 inch photograph of the OLDENBURG (the former WWI Auxiliary Cruiser ("Q" Ship Raider) S.M.S MOEWE, originally launched as PUNGO) when she was relaunched after being refurbished and refitted in May 1933.  She is shown in the shipyard at Bremen.  The back of the photograph is signed by the ORIGINAL WWI plank owners and her first commander,  Fregattenkapitan Nikolaus, Burggraf und Graf zu Dohna-Schlodien (signed as Graf Dohna).  Under his command, she was credited with sinking or capturing 38 ships, with a gross tonnage of 174,905 tons.  Graf Dohna received the Pour le Mérite in March 1916 from Kaiser Wilhelm for his command of MOEWE, the most successful surface raider of WWI.  This document was signed on 13 May, 1933.

This is a related document regarding the refit and relaunch of the newly renamed MOEWE as the SS OLDENBURG.  This is a 6-3/4 by 5-1/4 inch May 13, 1933 dated fancy gold embossed coat of arms menu for the new plank owners of the ship and several dignitaries of Bremen.  One signature of particular interest is that of the newly-appointed Reichsstatthalter of Oldenburg and Bremen and Gauleiter of Weser-Ems/Bremen, Karl Roever.  He had just been named Reichsstatthalter the week previous to this event.  His signature is just below the date on the dedication at the center of the card as "Röver"

Both pieces in this lot are offered at $499.99
